How Should I Manage Commenting on Social Media Platforms?

You have a valuable topic that you post to your business or nonprofit’s social media accounts. It goes to all the platforms you are active on. You are excited to finally get the message out and then, it happens!

You are bombarded with comments. Some supportive. Some not. Now you have to allocate time and effort to respond and manage all the comments. And you no longer have the manpower to focus on other tasks.

We recently had a client ask us, “What should we do differently in the future so that managing comments from others on our social media posts do not take over our day or even our week?”

Although each situation is unique, we usually recommend turning off comments on NextDoor and leaving them on for Facebook and Instagram. Let us explain why we recommend a different approach to comments on Nextdoor versus Facebook and Instagram, Reddit and other platforms.

While it might seem like all social media platforms should be managed the same way, their algorithms and audiences are actually quite different.

Nextdoor is an unmoderated platform so people tend to be more vocal with their opinions (good and bad). It is designed around neighborhood conversations, and discussions there can quickly become contentious, especially when topics touch on local issues or differing opinions. Even well-intentioned posts can attract debates that shift attention away from your mission. Because of this, disabling comments can help keep the focus on sharing information, reduce the need for constant moderation, and prevent a small number of negative voices from dominating the conversation. People can still contact your organization directly if they have questions or want to become involved.

Facebook and Instagram work differently. Their algorithms reward engagement, and comments are one of the strongest signals that content is valuable. When people like, comment, or share your posts, those platforms are more likely to show your content to additional followers. Even people who don’t already follow your organization might see posts with enough engagement. In other words, comments help increase your reach without requiring additional advertising dollars. Because these platforms allow you to hide individual comments or even block specific users, you have more control over the responses to your posts.

Keeping comments enabled on Facebook and Instagram also helps build community. Supporters can ask questions, share their own experiences, and encourage one another. Even simple comments such as “Thank you,” “Great information,” or “We’ll be there!” contribute positively to how the platforms distribute your content. And, the negative comments, “I disagree,” or “Not happening,” increase your reach and can play into your effort to get your message out.

Reddit, another platform that is growing in its importance for nonprofits and businesses, is unique.  Generally, unless you moderate the Reddit forum, you don’t get the choice of turning off comments.

Reddit is built around conversation. Users expect discussion, questions, and differing viewpoints. Posts that disable comments or organizations that avoid engaging with the community are often viewed as overly promotional or lacking transparency. Success on Reddit comes from participating in conversations rather than broadcasting messages. The most effective approach is to answer questions, share expertise, provide helpful resources, and contribute meaningful insights without constantly promoting products, services, or websites. Organizations that consistently offer genuine value tend to build credibility and trust over time.

Negative feedback should also be approached differently than on many other platforms. Legitimate criticism, respectful disagreement, and constructive discussion are normal parts of Reddit’s culture and should generally remain visible. Responding professionally, correcting factual inaccuracies when necessary, and acknowledging valid concerns demonstrates authenticity and accountability. Arguing with users or attempting to silence criticism often has the opposite effect and can damage an organization’s reputation.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Reddit and other social media platforms is that commenting is often more valuable than posting. Regularly participating in existing discussions, answering questions, and contributing thoughtful responses helps establish expertise and trust far more effectively than publishing a steady stream of promotional content. Organizations that approach Reddit as a place to join conversations rather than dominate them are far more likely to earn respect, build relationships, and develop a positive long-term presence within the communities they serve.

Of course, comments should still be monitored on all platforms.

In short, our recommendation is:

Disable comments on Nextdoor to minimize the potential for divisive public discussions and reduce moderation demands.

Keep comments enabled on Facebook and Instagram because they significantly improve visibility, reach, and community engagement, all of which help support your organization’s mission.

Post new content to Reddit but also post comments on other people’s posts to build your own following and trustworthiness.

The most important thing is to let social media be one portion of your “to do list”. Do not let posting, moderating or responding consume all of your time. You have a business to run!
