Your Marketing Deserves More Than “When Things Slow Down”

Wild Iris Marketing

You know the things you tell yourself about your marketing. You’ll update the website when you get through this busy stretch. You’ll rewrite that service description on a quiet afternoon. You’ll give it some real attention once the more urgent work is finished.

Then someone asks for your website address, and you catch yourself saying, “Just know, we need to update it.”

Yeah. We’ve been there too. We’ve often cited the Cobbler’s Children allegory, explaining we’re so busy taking care of our customer’s marketing that we often don’t do enough of our own.

At Wild Iris Marketing, we believe your marketing should feel like a good introduction to your business. So we recently gave our own website the time and attention that belief deserves.

We’ve updated the Wild Iris Marketing website!

It’s an opportunity to share our work, but also to talk frankly about something many business owners recognize; knowing your marketing needs attention and actually making time for it are two different things.

Running a business gives you plenty of reasons to put your own marketing off. Customers need you. Projects have deadlines. There are invoices to send, questions to answer, and decisions that can’t wait until next week. Reviewing your website can feel like something that will have to fit around everything else.

The trouble is that “when things slow down” rarely turns into a concrete date on the calendar. And waiting until things are getting slow can be catastrophic.

Meanwhile, your business keeps changing. You gain experience. Your services evolve. You learn which clients are the best fit and which problems you’re especially good at solving. If your marketing stays where it was, it can become an increasingly incomplete picture of the business you’re working so hard to build. You could be selling sports cars and your website is about buggy horse whips.

Sometimes you notice that gap long before you do anything about it. You read a page and think, “That doesn’t really explain what we do anymore.” You see a competitor’s website and wish yours felt as clear. You realize the service you most want people to hire you for barely gets mentioned.

Recognizing that your marketing isn’t what you want it to be can be uncomfortable. You can appreciate the work that went into it and still decide it’s time for a change.

Start by giving yourself enough time to look at it thoughtfully. Read your website as someone who has never met you. Can they understand what you offer, who you help, and how to get started? Does the language sound like your business? Are you giving enough attention to the work you want more of?

Those questions deserve more than a few distracted minutes between emails. They deserve a place on your calendar, room for discussion, and decisions about what needs to happen next. Otherwise, even the best intentions can turn into another six months of “we really need to work on that”.

You don’t have to tackle everything at once. You might begin with a homepage that explains your business more clearly, updated information about your services and service areas, or a more consistent way to stay in touch with customers. What matters is choosing a useful starting point and committing the time to follow through.

Our own website update is a reminder to give our marketing the same thoughtful attention we encourage our clients to give theirs. We invite you to take a look around WildIrisMarketing.com.

And if you’ve been adding a disclaimer every time you share your own website, we’d love to talk. We can help you figure out what needs attention and make a practical plan to get it done. So you can go back to doing what you do best, and more of it!
