The 3 Things Every Business Needs to Grow
Not all businesses fail because they have bad products or services. In fact, most don’t fail for these things at all. They fail because people aren’t finding them, don’t understand what they’re offering, or simply aren’t being driven to convert into customers on their website.
These aren’t problems with the business model itself. They’re a marketing problem, and marketing problems have solutions.
After years of working with small businesses across the Colorado foothills and Denver metro area, we’ve streamlined a growth strategy for businesses into understanding three simple things. Here’s what they are and why each one matters.
Your Website Needs to Work for You
A beautiful website doesn’t serve a purpose if it doesn’t turn visitors into customers.
This is a surprisingly common and expensive misconception in small business marketing. Business owners invest money and time into a site that looks really nice, they launch it, and then they wait for the phone to start ringing off the hook. When it doesn’t, they assume they need more traffic on the site. “We need more SEO,” they think. Often enough, that’s true. But just as often the problem is what happens with that traffic – or doesn’t – once it lands on the site.
The first time a visitor lands on your website, you have about ten seconds for them to figure out what you do, why you’re the right choice, and what they should do next to move the process along. If your site doesn’t answer all three of those questions quickly and clearly, then most will leave. They won’t call and they won’t fill out a contact form. They’ll just go to the next result on Google and someone else will get their business.
Clear messaging, easy navigation, and strong calls to action on a website are the way to turn a potential customer’s inquiry into interest. These things aren’t design preferences. They’re essential functional requirements of a successful site. Things that might seem small issues like a confusing homepage, a non-clickable phone number, or a contact form that’s hard to find, can cost you real opportunities every single day without you ever realizing it.
Here’s a question worth asking about your site: can a first-time visitor answer what you do, why you’re the best choice, and what to do next in ten seconds? If the answer is “no” or even just “maybe,” we have a good place to start.
You Need to Be Visible Where It Matters
Online search has changed over the past years. A lot.
It used to be that showing up near the top of Google results meant optimizing for keywords and hoping your site ranked well. That’s still part of it, but the big picture is much more complicated now. Google and AI tools are transitioning to a process of recommending businesses they trust and understand, not just businesses that happen to use the right keywords in the right places on their pages.
This is directly related to what we wrote about recently in our post on “EEAT.” This is how Google is now evaluating whether a website reflects genuine “Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness.” The businesses that will show up consistently in search results and in AI recommendations are the ones that have built credibility across their digital presence. Not just on their own website, but in reviews, their community presence, and sites where other people mention them online.
Visibility isn’t just about “being found.” It’s important to be found by the right people, in the right places, and at the right moment, which is when those people are actively looking for what you offer. Making that happen requires the right content in the right places, all structured in a way that search engines and AI tools will understand and recommend.
The question isn’t if you’re on Google. It’s whether you’re the correct answer to what their searching for.
You Need Consistent Messaging and Branding
People don’t buy from businesses they don’t understand or remember.
This probably sounds obvious, but it’s easy to underestimate the importance of that statement. A potential customer might encounter your business six or seven times in multiple places before they decide to reach out. They do a Google search, scroll past a social media post, get a friend’s recommendation, visit your website, or read a review on Yelp. If each of those touchpoints tells a slightly varying story about who you are and what you do, the final impression is more likely to be confusion than confidence.
A clear message and a strong, consistent brand build trust and make buying easy for the customer. When someone encounters your business repeatedly and it always looks, sounds, and feels like the same company saying the samethings, that repetition does a lot. It makes you recognizable and memorable. And when the moment strikes that they need what you offer, you’re the one they will think of first. We call that being top of mind.
Consistent messaging means your website, your Google Business Profile, your social media, and every other place your business shows up are all telling the same story with the same messaging, same visual identity, and same voice. This doesn’t mean identical, because a social media post and a GBP description serve different purposes, but it means unmistakably from the same business.
When your message is clear and consistent, the right people will find and choose you. That’s not a theory, it’s the reality we see with every client whose marketing we have helped bring into alignment.
Three Strikes and You’re In
A website that converts visitors into customers, being visible in all the right places, and delivering consistent messaging that builds trust. These three things work together, and they build on and reinforce each other.
A great website with zero visibility will not get found, high visibility with a website that doesn’t convert traffic is a waste, and inconsistent messaging will simply undermine both efforts.
Wild Iris Marketing can help your small businesses get all three working together. If your marketing feels scattered or you’re not sure which of these three concepts might be holding you back, reach out. We’re happy to take a look and help figure it out!
